What is Shopify? (And why is everyone talking about it)

Published on Updated on

You've surely heard of Shopify. Perhaps you're wondering if it's right for you, or if it's just another trendy platform promising the moon and stars.

In this article, I'll simply explain:

  • what Shopify is,

  • who it's for,

  • its advantages (and also its limitations),

  • and why it's currently one of the best solutions for selling online.

What exactly is Shopify?

In a simple sentence: Shopify is an e-commerce platform that allows you to create an online store without coding.

It's a "turnkey" software, a SaaS: you subscribe, you choose a design (called a theme), you add your products... and your store is online.
No need for hosting, technical updates, or spending nights trying to figure out why your site is buggy → all of that is managed by Shopify.

👉 Specifically, Shopify allows you to sell:

  • physical products (fashion, beauty, home decor, food…),

  • digital products (ebooks, courses, presets, etc.),

  • services (coaching, consulting).

The advantages of Shopify

It's simple, that's why Shopify has exploded in recent years.

  • Ease of use: no need to be a developer, you can get your store up and running quickly.

  • Reliability: your site is hosted on secure servers, it won't "crash" when you run a promotion.

  • Customization: thanks to themes (free or paid) and thousands of applications, you can adapt your site to your business.

  • Scalability: you start small, you can grow (and go from 10 sales/month to 10,000 without changing platforms).

  • Integrations: Shopify easily connects to payment methods, your logistics, and even marketing tools (emailing, invoicing, etc.).

In short: it's the tool that lets you focus on your business, not on the technical side.

Who is Shopify for?

Shopify is perfect for:

  • Brand creators (fashion, beauty, home decor, accessories).

  • Digital entrepreneurs (ebooks, courses, coaching).

  • SMEs who want a professional and modern website quickly.

👉 If you just want a showcase site to present your activity without selling online → this is not the best option. Shopify is truly designed for e-commerce.

The limitations of Shopify (let's be clear)

No solution is perfect. Here's what you need to know before you start:

  • Monthly subscription: expect to pay between €30 and €90 per month on average (excluding paid apps).

  • Advanced customization: possible, but if you really want to go beyond the themes, you'll need technical help (that's also why I exist 😅).

  • Not free: unlike other open-source solutions, Shopify is a SaaS (software with a subscription).

Shopify vs other platforms

  • WordPress/WooCommerce: more flexible, but much more technical and time-consuming. You have to manage hosting, security, updates.

  • Wix or Squarespace: simple for a showcase site, but limited if you really want to develop an online store that scales.

  • Prestashop: powerful, but complex and less intuitive for beginners.

👉 Shopify is the balance: accessible, reliable, and designed for selling.

Conclusion

So, what is Shopify?
👉 It's the simplest and most effective e-commerce platform for creating a serious online store, even without technical skills.

That's why I've chosen it as the core of my business: because it allows my clients to go from an idea to a selling website, without getting bogged down in technicalities.
